Histone-arginine methyltransferase CARM1
CARM1 belongs to the PRMT family of methyltransferases and catalyses monomethylation and asymmetric dimethylation of histone H3 at arginine 17 position and monomethylates arginine at position 2 and 26, which is reported to be linked to nuclear hormone receptor regulated transcriptional activation (PMID: 11751582, PMID: 16497732, PMID: 15186775). CARM1 methylates CREB-binding protein (CBP) in order to promote co-activation of transcription (PMID: 12374746). It is a part of nucleosomal methylation activator complex (NUMAC) which plays an important role in the regulation of nuclear-receptor signalling pathway (PMID: 14729568). CARM1 mediated methylation of H3R17 is involved in the activation of NF-kB target genes and also in the regulation of inflammatory genes in monocytes (PMID: 16497732). It also regulates E2F1, a transcription factor implicated in oestrogen dependent breast cancers (PMID: 18172323).
