Histone deacetylase 1

HDAC1 belongs to the Class I histone deacetylases and is the first protein to show the deacetylase activity (PMID: 8602529, PMID: 18292778). HDAC1 knockout embryos are lethal (PMID: 12032080). Levels of HDAC1 are shown to be elevated in human pancreatic adenocarcinoma tissues and cell lines. Silencing of HDAC1 via RNAi lead to inhibition of proliferation associated with the upregulation of cyclin-dependent kinase(cdk) inhibitors (PMID: 21301206). HDAC1 has been suggested as a biomarker for benign teratomas (PMID: 21124297). HDAC1 along with HDAC2 are recruited at the double stranded break sites and play an important role in DNA damage repair to promote Nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ)(PMID: 20802485).
