Ribosomal protein S6 kinase alpha-5
It belongs to the AGC Ser/Thr protein kinase family. It is a Mitogen and stress-activated kinase. MSK1 is responsible for the phosphorylation of H2A Serine 1 that mediates transcriptional repression (PMID: 15010469). It is known to phosphorylate and modulate the activity of p65 which is turn controls the expression of NF-kB target genes (PMID: 12628924). H3S10 phosphorylation is observed in human breast carcinomas (PMID: 16651411). Arsenic trioxide induced apoptosis of leukemic cells is regulated by MSK1 through a negative feedback (PMID: 16762916). Msk1 also causes phosphorylation of H3S28 that initiates a methyl-acetyl switch at the neighbouring lysine 27 (methylated by Polycomb repressive complex) subsequently derepressing the target genes (PMID: 21282660, PMID: 20864036).
