Lysine-specific demethylase 4C
KDM4C belongs to JHDM3 family of demethylases that catalyse demethylation of tri- and di-methylated H3K9. It is shown to delocalise HP1 protein and thus inhibiting heterochromatinisation. Levels of KDM4C are upregulated in many oesophageal squamous carcinoma cell lines (PMID: 16732293). KDM4C is reported to be regulated by Hypoxia induced factor (HIF-1 alpha) and may have implications in cancer (PMID: 18713068). KDM4C levels are significantly upregulated in aggressive breast cancers where the demethylase activity is important for the self-renewal of the stem cell repertoire (PMID: 19784073).
