Lysine-specific demethylase 5C
JARID1C belongs to the JARID1 family of demethylases. Gene for SMCX is present on the X chromosome and is found to escape X inactivation (PMID: 7951230). It demthylates H3K4me3 to H3K4me2/me1 but not to the unmethylated state. It is reported to be altered during X-linked mental retardation (PMID: 17320160, PMID: 17468742). It is also implicated in the repression of E2 protein which is required for the silencing of the viral oncogenic proteins during pathogenesis of human papilloma virus (HPV)-associated cancers (PMID: 20133580). JARID1C is shown to be mutated in many human cancers (PMID: 20054297).
