Elongator complex protein 3

Elp3 belongs to the GNAT family of histone acetyltransferases. Elp3 is a part of the human elongator complex and is found to acetylate histone H3 (PMID: 11818576). Elp3 mediated H3 acetylation plays a crucial role in familial dysautonomia (PMID: 16713582). There is evidence to believe that Elp3 is invovled in transcription and cell cycle regulation via its histone acetylation activity. It might also help in chromatin organisation during the mitotic cycle (PMID: 19779648). Knockdown of Elp3 has been demonsated to impair paternal DNA demethylation (PMID: 20054296).
