Histone-lysine N-methyltransferase SUV39H1
SUV39H1 is a mammalian homologue of the yeast Su(var)39h protein. Its major function is methylation of H3 lysine 9 which creates an interaction site for HP1 protein which promotes heterochromatin formation (PMID: 11242053). It is reported to methylate nucleosomal histone in promoter region of leukaemia associated PML-RAR fusion protein in order to promote heterochromatinisation and silencing of the target genes (PMID: 16449642). Disruption of its activity in vivo leads to aberrant mitotic division. it is also involved in the regulation of the chromatin structure (PMID: 10949293). SUV39H1 along with SIRT1 is reported to mediate silencing of rDNA locus in response to energy deficient conditions inside the cell, thus playing a crucial role in energy homeostasis (PMID: 18485871).
