SET and MYND domain-containing protein 3

SMYD2 catalyses trimethylation of histone H3 at lysine 4 position. It has a SET domain and an MYND domain that forms a unique domain architecture. SMYD3 is overexpressed in colorectal cancers and helps in carcinogenesis (PMID: 15235609). SMYD3 knockdown causes cell cycle arrest and induction of apoptosis. This suggests its importance in cancer therapeutics (PMID: 20957523). Also reported to trans-activate the telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) gene (PMID: 17363582).
