Histone-lysine N-methyltransferase, H3 lysine-9 specific 3
G9a catalyse the mono and dimethylation of H3K9 and H3K27 with high specificity which is important for chromatin organisation (PMID: 11316813). G9a is reported to mediate transcriptional repression via interaction with CDP/cut complex (PMID: 15269344). G9a self-methylates and creates a binding site for the Heterochromatin protein (HP1) (PMID: 17707231). It promotes metastasis of lung cancers by repression of cell adhesion molecules (PMID: 20940408). G9a is also reported to influence T helper cell differentiation via complex regulatory mechanisms demonstrating its role in immune system (PMID: 20421388). G9a is shown to methylate histone H1.2 in a variant specific manner (PMID: 20334638). It is part of a large multimeric complex comprising of Suv39h1, GLP1 and SETDB1 (PMID: 20129054).
